As Winter Ends

What things I would do

for one little word written

in Hemmingway’s hand.

On a moonless night

wasted, open-eyed

wakeful in my thoughts of you

a swift river without sleep.

A great stretch of field

winter’s blanket set aside

the hooves of a horse

sinking in the permafrost

such odd shadows they do cast.
